Deadhorse Hill’s Redfish

Deadhorse hill is tucked away on Main Street in Worcester. Old brick lined one whole wall giving this place a rustic feeling while the large bar dominated the center of the restaurant. A nice drink list to choose from with cocktails to beer to a nice wine list. Not over loud as you would expect with a bar in the center of the restaurant. Felt trendy and was very busy for a Tuesday night.

My husband and I decided on an appetizer of fried chicken thighs, we received two large chicken thighs per order. This was by far the best fried chicken I have ever tasted. It was extra crispy on the outside and cooked to a juicy perfection inside. I hope they decide to put this dish on their main course because it truly is outstanding.

For my entrée I ordered the redfish entrée which came lightly seasoned so not to take away from the delicate white fish and it came on a bed of wheat berries and an avocado sauce. The fish had a slight crisp to the outside and flaked nicely when cut into with my fork. My fish was cooked perfectly and went very nicely with the wheat berries and sauce. It was just the right portion size for me.

For dessert I ordered the pastry with espresso flavored ice cream. This was absolutely divine and I regret not being able to finish it because I was so full.

Our server, Carlos, was very knowledgeable about the menu and was able to explain some of the ingredients to us knowledgeably. He was very attentive and pleasant to talk with. I would go back and hope to have Carlos again as a waiter.

I can’t say enough about the fried chicken thighs. My mouth waters thinking just thinking about them. I was also very happy with my choice of redfish as my entrée and of course dessert to finish off the night was amazing. The service was excellent and I cannot wait to go back here and try some other options on the menu. Over all a very satisfying and good meal.

Deadhorse Hill – Grilled Skirt Steak

Grilled Skirt Steak from deadhorse hill on Main Street in Worcester, MA

Deadhorse hill occupies the former space that Ritual had held prior to closing. The location had been redecorated with a new center bar that was fun and had a nice wood bar top and newly decorated walls that included murals. The staff were pleasant, professional and knowledgeable and most were wearing local themed Worcester shirts. After looking at the menu it was apparent that there was a strong theme of locally sources and seasonal dinner options.

After looking through the menu options for the night I opted for the Grilled Skirt Steak which was served with heirloom tomatoes and a spicy avocado vin. The plates presentation of the grilled skirt steak and heirloom tomato’s was perfect. The heirloom tomatoes were perfectly ripe and served with local herbs. Unfortunately, the skirt steak missed the mark in my opinion. Skirt steak is usually know for being flavorful and slightly chewy due to the cut. The steak that I received that night was fairly chewy, under cooked slightly and lacked some of the flavor I had hoped for, given the cut of meat and the avocado vin.

Throughout the night, I sampled other dishes and appetizers that all seemed to be of a much higher caliber than the main course I ordered. So I would likely attribute the issue just with this dish for the night.

Service was very good and the stall were all helpful and professional and willing to help. The vibe and atmosphere was fun and the attention the quality of food and beverage that deadhorse hill is creating is evident.

Deadhorse hill seems very committed to using high quality locally sourced food and beverage to create a high quality ever changing menu for dinner. The chef and staff seem committed to serving a quality product in the Worcester dining scene.
