Middle Eastern Vegetarian

Middle Eastern selection at Bay State Shawarma

Middle Eastern selection at Bay State Shawarma

We recently visited the Bay State Shawarma and Grill which is located on Water Street. I was immediately excited because I love the Canal District and adding a new restaurant is a plus! We entered into a cafeteria style setting with the food behind a viewing counter. I was excited to see they had an assortment of vegetarian options as well as many meat options, those too on display, some on rotisserie! I chose the following: Vegetarian Grape leaves, Baba Ghanouj, Loubieh and Mujadara. The grape leaves were delicious, the leaves were not stringy (which I find happens more often than not) and the rice had a wonderful assortment of herbs and spices. Next I tried the Loubieh, I had never had this dish before, green beans mixed in a tomato sauce with onions and spices, truly a delight, there was so much flavor considering the few ingredients, the beans were fresh and they mixed well with the tomato sauce and spices. I will definitely get that again. Another dish I had never tried, the Mujadara, a mix of lentils, fried onions and spices served over rice. Hands down this was my favorite dish, lentil dishes can be dry, not this one, a blend of strong but not overpowering spices and caramelized but not dried out onions, the rice was great though my only wish would be this dish was served a bit warmer, but that might be due to the fact that there were so many of us to serve. Lastly, was the Baba Ghanouj, I like mine a bit on the smokier side, and this hit the mark! Creamy and smoky, I was in heaven, their pita bread was large and fresh and perfect for dipping. As I was finishing my last bite I was already planning when I could return, not only is this the best Middle Eastern food I have had in this area it is also paired with a bakery! One stop shopping! I highly recommend for those who love great Middle Eastern food that does not lack in flavor!

Ahi Burger from The Fix

Ahi Burger from The Fix on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, MA

The Fix Burger Bar was the June stop for Foodies; just happen to be my birthday as well so I was looking forward to a fun filled evening with great friends. If you had been at the original Mezcal then you would recognize the layout, yet the décor was changed. The overall atmosphere was low key and inviting.

I do not eat red meat but assumed they would be sure to have a veggie burger or perhaps even a fish burger. Not sure if I have mentioned before but I do not look at a menu before I go to a new restaurant, I love the element of surprise. To my delight, they offered both a veggie and fish, along with some non-meat meals as well.

I ordered the sangria to start – oh wait, we are talking about food. Okay, we ordered the Blue Cheese Polenta Tater Tots to start and share, they were delicious. Coated perfectly, the childhood memory of a tater tot was brought to an adult level, sophisticated with a twist. They were accompanied by a duo of delicious dipping sauces. One very spicy the other, blue cheese was for me the perfect sauce for dipping.

The Chef was so gracious to send out many of the appetizers they have to offer for us to all sample and share. I have to say the Chicken Wings were amazing! I do not really care for wings but the flavor/rub on these and the crispiness was just perfection.

For my meal I ordered the “Non-Burger” The Ahi – Seared tuna, spicy kimchi (had them hold), sesame chips, Sriracha aioli, sweet soy, sesame roll, side of the veggie fries. I have to say, I loved this non-burger, burger. The fish was cooked perfectly, seared just enough but not too raw. The flavors were robust and not too spicy, just a delicious mix of flavor and texture. The veggie fries were very good, lightly battered and tasty, very different. Our server was a great sport with how loud and large our group was. She was very attentive and welcoming. Kudos to her, and the Chef of course.

I will certainly go back to The Fix, loved the food, the adult milk shakes sounded amazing for a dessert drink but I was super full. In addition, let’s be honest, I need more chicken wings! You thought I was going to say sangria, didn’t you?
