Bo Xao Bong Cai Xanh

Bo Xao Bong Cai Xanh from Dalat on Park Avenue in Worcester, MA

Bo Xao Bong Cai Xanh from Dalat on Park Avenue in Worcester, MA

It’s disappointing that when most people think about Vietnamese food they immediately think of phở. Well, I should clarify, I’ve disappointed myself in so strictly associating Vietnamese restaurants with phở (but, in my defense, most restaurants have it in their name). That’s where Dalat Restaurant comes into the mix. Located across from the firehouse on Park Avenue, this Vietnamese restaurant is tucked away in a small, unassuming storefront nestled between a barber shop and foot massage parlor. Admittedly, many Worcester diners would opt for more active spots like Pho Dakao where, on weekend nights, a young active crowd is found singing karaoke with tasty libations in hand. But this helps keep Dalat real.

Upon entering the restaurant, you find a large open space with a dozen or so tables sparsely decorated (table cloth, fork, chopsticks, and napkin). Towards the rear is a counter where you can place your to-go orders and also pay once you’ve completed your meal. Next to the counter is a table with small television set where you’ll typically find some of the restaurants family members sitting. The atmosphere is great.

The menu, which contains over 100 items (of which the charming waitress had numerically memorized) from the common Vietnamese items like phở to the exotic items like pigs feet and blood. For my dinner, I chose to stay safe with the Bo Xao Bong Cai Xanh (beef with broccoli, for those who speak American-Chinese food). The meal consisted of thinly sliced beef, broccoli, white onions, and a sauce that combined sweet with spicy (just a hint) with undertones of soy, vinegar, garlic, and spices that complimented the thin meat and vegetables. The sticky white rice was the perfect accompaniment to the meal by helping savor the flavors of the sauce and make a more formidable bite with the beef and broccoli.

Yes, I may have skipped out on the exotic options but, knowing the beef with broccoli satisfied my needs, my next visit I may have to venture beyond my comfort zone.

Ahi Burger from The Fix

Ahi Burger from The Fix on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, MA

The Fix Burger Bar was the June stop for Foodies; just happen to be my birthday as well so I was looking forward to a fun filled evening with great friends. If you had been at the original Mezcal then you would recognize the layout, yet the décor was changed. The overall atmosphere was low key and inviting.

I do not eat red meat but assumed they would be sure to have a veggie burger or perhaps even a fish burger. Not sure if I have mentioned before but I do not look at a menu before I go to a new restaurant, I love the element of surprise. To my delight, they offered both a veggie and fish, along with some non-meat meals as well.

I ordered the sangria to start – oh wait, we are talking about food. Okay, we ordered the Blue Cheese Polenta Tater Tots to start and share, they were delicious. Coated perfectly, the childhood memory of a tater tot was brought to an adult level, sophisticated with a twist. They were accompanied by a duo of delicious dipping sauces. One very spicy the other, blue cheese was for me the perfect sauce for dipping.

The Chef was so gracious to send out many of the appetizers they have to offer for us to all sample and share. I have to say the Chicken Wings were amazing! I do not really care for wings but the flavor/rub on these and the crispiness was just perfection.

For my meal I ordered the “Non-Burger” The Ahi – Seared tuna, spicy kimchi (had them hold), sesame chips, Sriracha aioli, sweet soy, sesame roll, side of the veggie fries. I have to say, I loved this non-burger, burger. The fish was cooked perfectly, seared just enough but not too raw. The flavors were robust and not too spicy, just a delicious mix of flavor and texture. The veggie fries were very good, lightly battered and tasty, very different. Our server was a great sport with how loud and large our group was. She was very attentive and welcoming. Kudos to her, and the Chef of course.

I will certainly go back to The Fix, loved the food, the adult milk shakes sounded amazing for a dessert drink but I was super full. In addition, let’s be honest, I need more chicken wings! You thought I was going to say sangria, didn’t you?
