Greek Pie from Corner Grille

Greek Pie from Corner Grille in Worcester, MA

Unassuming exterior. Small eat-in area inside. Two ceramic deer heads with stick antlers on the wall. And two red chalkboards boasting the fare in impressive chalk-script. None of this matters. The pizza is excellent. The quality and taste of every pizza on the menu cannot be praised enough. Most pizzas around are close to equal parts crust and topping. The Corner Grille does not follow this model, setting itself light-years higher in flavor than your usual pizza joint. The crust is extremely thin, and it serves its two purposes well. First, it is a means of getting the toppings of the pie to ones mouth. Secondly, it provides a textural crunch. I ordered the Greek Pie consisting of baby spinach, garlic, lemon, oregano, diced tomatoes, and cheese. It was a panic order, I’ll admit, as I could not decide which to try. I later learned that no matter which I had ordered I would have been thrilled. The Greek Pie was salty, crispy, garlicky goodness. There was not an overwhelming amount of spinach or garlic. Indeed, the pizza seemed to have the ideal quantity of all ingredients. The thin slices allowed me to consume several mouthfuls of not only my pie, but also slices from my neighbors and from the two extra pizzas that materialized next to our table. The staff was amazing and I could tell how much pride they take in their food. I cannot possibly recommend Corner Grille more, and look forward to returning again for their Chicken Caesar Salad Pie!

Caveman Pizza from Corner Grille

Caveman Pizza from Corner Grille on Pleasant Street in Worcester, MA

January’s Foodies adventure brought our group to the Corner Grille on Pleasant Street, a great spot I hadn’t enjoyed for a few years. The front of the restaurant is small with limited seating, but comfortable, casually decorated with bright colors and a funky, cozy feel. The big chalkboard menu described some unusual, but interesting pizzas choices…but my eyes were fixated on the Caveman, a delightful combination of red sauce, pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, bacon, mushrooms, onions, peppers and cheese. Did I mention it had meat on it? The rest of the pizza menu look enticing also…Chicken Pesto, Greek, Buffalo Chicken, even a Chicken Curry pizza. But I stuck with my original thought and was not disappointed.

The pizza has to be eaten to be understood. My words will not do it justice. First off, it is 14″ square with a super thin, crispy crust. The toppings are fresh and plentiful, the sauce is sweet, rich and flavorful and the spicy red pepper flakes I added made this pizza one of the most enjoyable casual meals I have had in a long time. As I finished my last bite I wondered to myself why I hadn’t been back to this wonderful hidden gem.

To top off a great meal, the owner sent our table a sampling of their homemade desserts….red velvet whoopee pies, peanut butter and chocolate brownies and molasses filled, oatmeal whoopee pies that were decadently delicious! I also noticed huge cookies, rice crispy treats and more at the counter.

They also have a large selection of salads, wraps and sandwiches, as well as hummus, tabbouleh, grape leaves, chicken pot pie, shepherds pie and mac and cheese to take home from their market display.

Corner Grille is not your typical pizza place, in fact it is one of Worcester’s most unique pizza establishments and one that I will be going to again in the very near future and highly recommend that you try it also!
