American Kobe Burger

As it appears on menu: A 1⁄2 pound of ground 100% American Kobe beef flame grilled and accompanied by the regional toppings of your choice.

Facts on the Dish: This menu item allowed for a choice of one side dish including soup, rice or Alexia crinkle cut French fries, brown rice, snap peas, broccoli, or rice pilaf. In addition, you could have the burger prepared with regional toppings such as the Californian with sprouts and avocado, Cattleman with BBQ sauce and bacon, Fungus Among Us with mushrooms and tomato, Fenway Grand Slam with Italian sausage, peppers and onions or the Indian Double Dare with lettuce, tomato and ghost chili sour cream topping.

Review: I arrived at EVO with a tremendous appetite so right away I knew I would be having a burger. When I saw the 1/2 pound American Kobe burger on the menu it made my decision easy, all I needed was to choose how it would be prepared. I chose the Fenway Grand Slam so my 1/2 burger now came with italian sausage, peppers and onions – a meat lovers dream!

When my dish arrived it did not disappoint. The burger was massive (a true 1/2 pound) and there was plenty of sausage, peppers and onions piled on. The buttery brioche roll was perfectly caramelized on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. I was underwhelmed by the brown rice side dish I chose, but it was the burger I was interested in anyway.

Because of the size of the burger I cut it in half and immediately I was disappointed as I ordered the burger medium rare and the burger was clearly overcooked. But when I tasted it, I changed my mind as the burger was perfectly tender and the addition of spicy italian sausage mixed well with the flavor from the burger. The brown rice side dish, which appeared to be more of an afterthought than anything else, was bland and flavorless.

The Bomb

Pizza is a natural choice when choosing to grab dinner simply because of the readily accessible number of pizza parlors in any city. While we’ve mentioned our satisfaction with places like Wonder Bar, Pepe’s, and Blue Jeans Pizza, a newcomer to the area, with an almost cult-like following, is Flats. Their menu offers a diverse selection of salads, sandwiches, and, of course, flatbread pizza “made in traditional Neapolitan style with an old world attention to detail and crazy obsession on local quality ingredients.” As pictured, “The Bomb” consists of melt-in-your-mouth grilled sirloin (worthy to eat without the pizza), large mushrooms, caramelized onions and the combination of cheddar, mozzarella and blue cheeses. Whether you are an environmentalist (pretty much everything is “green”), a health conscious eater (organic and/or vegan options), or simply in the mood to indulge in a slice or box of pizza, Flats could be worth a repeat visit. What makes the small, detailed atmosphere even better? It’s BYOB.
