I have to admit I was overwhelmed when presented with the menu at Zorba’s Taverna Restaurant and Bar – such a wide variety of items to choose from. But I quickly decided to go with something I haven’t had in a real long time – stuffed peppers. Who didn’t have stuffed peppers as a family meal growing up.
The casserole dish came piping hot with two large green stuffed peppers surrounded by a sea of marina sauce with the mozzarella cheese oozing out of the top of each pepper. The amount of sauce was a little heavy for me given it was just for two peppers but I was glad it didn’t make the peppers soggy. The peppers were cooked perfectly as I could easily cut them with my fork but still had the firmness to them to hold the filling. The best way to eat the peppers is to grab some pepper along with the “filling” – all in one bite. The filling or “stuffed part of the pepper” was what I expected and remembered from childhood – ground beef, white rice and a little tomato sauce with just a touch of oregano and basil to give it some added flavor. Overall it was a simple but flavorful dish that reminded me of a home cooked meal that I had growing up. Great comfort food for a cool rainy night. -MM
