I have to admit I am not exactly a fan of Indian food, but I am always willing to try something new—enter Surya Indian Restaurant. I was totally lost with the menu, but my fellow foodies were very helpful in translating and making recommendations.

I started with the Vegetable Tikki appetizer. The dish arrived with two huge patties of mashed potatoes minced with fresh vegetables, and lentils. They were topped with a hot sauce as well as a yogurt sauce and served on a bed of cucumber and tomato. The patties were mostly fried mashed potatoes, but overall an enjoyable comfort food. Definitely something to share with a friend or have as a meal.

The Keema Nan was Indian style bread with filled with lamb and gilled onions. The Nan was very doughy and the filling uninteresting. It’s not something I would order again.

Punjabi Karii is a vegetable main dish. The description reads “sweet and sour mouth-watering yogurt sauce cooked with gram flour and exotic spices.” I was not exactly sure what the patties were floating around in the sauce, but they tasted much like the friend mashed potato appetizer. I had requested the sauce to be spicy hot and it did not disappoint. It was a pleasant blend of creamy and spice with a red pepper kind of kick. -KP

Chicken Tandoori

When I heard the foodies group was heading to Surya Indian Restaurant, I was excited for some nan. I have to admit; I have limited experience with Indian food. I luckily sat next to someone that knew all the dishes and was a huge help explaining and offering suggestions. Thank you! I ordered the cheese nan – clay oven baked bread stuffed with homemade cheese & spices. I honestly don’t think any form of nan could disappoint my love for this bread. The cheese nan was very good; not overly stuffed and the flavors of the spice were a perfect balance. For my dish, I decided to not be very adventurous (I know shame on me.) I ordered the chicken tandoori – fresh chicken marinated in tandoori sauce and BBQ in a clay oven. I was told that often this is prepared with a dry rub on the chicken however; mine was more in a sauce. I was not disappointed. While the serving was far too large for my appetite the flavors was just spicy enough and went well with the rice and yes the nan. The service was also fantastic. Going to Surya has definitely piqued my taste buds to venture towards more Indian flavors and well…. more nan. -LB
