Natchitoches Meat Pies

In lieu of an entrée at Gumbo, I opted for two indulgent appetizers – each entirely different ‘fried’ experience. The Natchitoches meat pies were surprising light and a flakey golden brown. I enjoyed the finely ground texture of the meat and the mild Creole flavors with an overall warm buttery appeal without being heavy. The jalapeno aioli added another dimension – I tasted less jalapeno and cooler ranch than I would have expected, but was very content nevertheless. On the other hand, the shrimp and eggplant beignets were heavy and doughier than I would have liked. Each fritter contained a bite or two of shrimp and the eggplant was entirely indiscernible. The Creole tartar sauce was undoubtedly the star of this dish and I appreciated the distinct Creole kick. The savory beignets were a unique concept that could be improved upon and I only hope that Gumbo adds the traditional sweet beignets to their dessert menu – a dish no New Orleans kitchen should be without!  Overall, I think that Gumbo is a refreshing addition to the Worcester restaurant scene and I look forward to trying their other dishes. –MO

Grilled Swordfish

Upon entering Lago Ristorante, we were greeted by a striking woman with gorgeous hair. She was friendly and spirited.

Looking through the menu, I was happy to see so many fish options as I tend to order fish when I eat out. I am always a fan of soup du jour so I was sure to ask our very nice waitress what was being offered. I was elated to hear that they were offering a chicken noodle soup. When the soup arrived, it appeared to be very full of all the good ingredients and it was at a perfect temperature. Upon my first bite, I knew that none would be left behind. The broth was mild but flavored with some fantastic spices and herbs. The vegetables and chicken were abundant and tasted delicious. Overall, this was the highlight of my meal; I should add that the bread was delectable with a soft texture and some wonderful infused herbs with great dipping oil.

I decide to order the grilled swordfish (always a favorite of mine) seasoned with lemon pepper and the double vegetable as a side. The swordfish was a perfect size and the sautéed vegetables looked delicious. I thought the swordfish was seasoned very well; it was not overly seasoned and was cooked perfectly. The vegetables were very enjoyable, there was one vegetable that none of us at my table could discern so we asked the owner what this mystery vegetable was and he said it was eggplant; that was a fantastic addition! I would certainly try Lago again as the prices were reasonable and the food was very good.
