Brunch at Via: Pasta Carbonara

Pasta Carbonara from Via on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, MA

Pasta Carbonara from Via on Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, MA

While many diners might frequent Via Italian Table on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street for a hearty dinner, it would be a mistake to forego the diverse Sunday brunch experience. Via boasts a wide array of breakfast-to-lunch options with unique finds such as lemon ricotta pancakes and porchetta eggs benedict.

My meal began with piping-hot-out-of-the-fryer zeppole: small Italian donut holes made in-house and dusted plentifully with sugar and cinnamon. Mildly sweet and doughy on the inside, these proved quite a naughty and irresistible way to start the day — everyone at the table was licking their fingers. My main course was a dense pasta carbonara with crisp English peas and house-cured pancetta slices. The spaghetti was cooked al dente and garnished with pea shoots which helped cut the heaviness of the garlic cream sauce.

The highlight of the meal, however, was when my generous neighbor offered me a slice of her smoked salmon plate. This is the dish that will bring me back for more! Rustic toast rounds accompanied by a generous selection of smoky lox, capers, sliced red onion, a lemon wedge, fresh dill, and a mustard crema. The flavor of the smoked salmon was unparalleled – really, the best I’ve had — and the mustard crema in lieu of traditional cream cheese was a welcome surprise. Given the impeccable service and beautiful ambiance dining al fresco amidst a plethora of hanging flower baskets, I will have to return to Via….next time, however, the smoked salmon plate is mine all mine.

Brunch: Pasta Carbonara from Via on Shrewsbury Street

Pasta Carbonara from Via on Shrewsbury Street

Via Italian Table is located on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street, which hides a patio area out back that is very pleasant and peaceful—A great place for brunch with friends and family.

I had a “Smokey Mary” to start my morning. It was delicious with a nice Smokey taste as the name proclaimed. It was a twist on a bloody Mary but very similar. It came with a stalk of celery and a strip of bacon dipped into the glass. It was delicious and the perfect start to my day.

I ordered the smoked salmon appetizer and shared this with a friend. This was by far one of the best-smoked salmon I have ever had. It came with pieces of toasted crostini bread, a mustard cream sauce, sliced red onions and green capers. Delightful. This was the highlight of my morning. If you are a smoked salmon fan, you must try this.

For my entrée, I ordered the pasta Carbonara. Not exactly what I think of when I think brunch, but I was craving pasta and so wanted my fix. The portion was nice and it came with English pea sprigs on top, which made for a nice presentation. The pancetta had just the right amount of smokey-ness and the cream sauce was excellent. The fresh pea’s added a bright taste to the dish. Overall, I was pleased with my Carbonara, it was not anything out of the ordinary but still very good and I enjoyed it. What I would go back for though is the smoked salmon and I would love to try some of the other brunch menu items. Some of my dining companions had what looked to be some amazing dishes. I just wish I could have ordered more entrees’ to try.
